About

Gill Lanyon

At the start of the first Covid lockdown in 2020 I decided to start researching the family tree as a way of keeping busy. I thought it would keep me occupied for a few weeks but genealogy is addictive and here we are two and a half years later building a website to hold some of the amazing information I found.

When creating a family tree there are inevitably gaps in the records and sometimes it’s necessary to build a picture from what is available and then try to disprove it. Ultimately some things can’t be stated with 100% certainty but the evidence is fairly compelling and sometimes you hit a brick wall and can’t go any further. I’ve used a wealth of sources and hope I have properly attributed everything. Mistakes are mine, if you spot any please let me know.

Where I state that there is ‘no further trace’ of a person, that just means I haven’t managed to find them or that there are too many people with the same name to identify the correct one.

The spelling of names in the posts varies enormously. I’ve tended to go with the spelling used in the document I’m looking at. e.g Merefeild, Merefield, Merefild can be spelt a number of ways and I have spelt it different ways in various posts.

The website isn’t the complete tree which contains several thousand people, rather it is a collection of the more interesting people and stories. If you can add anything please get in touch.

In order to keep the project manageable I’ve limited myself to following only those people who will carry on the Lanyon name. Sadly that means not following the daughters and their families, they probably deserve a site of their own!

The site does not contain any information on living people (unless they have given their permission) to protect privacy.
