The Lanyon family have had connections with Gwinear going back to at least the 15th century but the Gwinear branch of the Lanyons begins with Edward Lanyon and Margery Chappell. Edward moved to Gwinear in the 1580 he lived at the Barton of Coswin renaming it Lanyon House.

Gwinear Church (named after St Winierus) was built in the 13th century. In 1441 Michael Lercedekne the treasurer of Exeter Cathedral left money to build a church tower at Gwinear.
